Hobbit Collector's & Lord Of The Rings Book Of Westmarch Very Early Prints

THE HOBBIT COLLECTOR'S EDITION. And THE LORD OF THE RINGS THE RED BOOK OF WESTMARCH. Slipcased Gift Editions NOTE: The white line shown in the picture on the Hobbit is NOT actually on the book!

Please see physical description below.. Here are two of JRR Tolkien's masterpieces that include The Hobbit Collector's Edition and The Lord of the Rings Red Book of Westmarch which I have paired together to make this absolutely EXQUISITE set!

In a hole in the ground, lived a hobbit... And so the story began!

Met with instant critical acclaim when published in 1973, this supposedly limited edition was released and was so popular, almost 33 years later, it is (apparently) limited to how many they can print! The 73 indicates the first year of printing, so a 1966 copy is a fabrication of someone's imagination. Bound with green leather and gold embellishments to the spine and cover and set in a leather slipcase, this copy also features Tolkien's own color illustrations. The Lord of the Rings Red Book of Westmarch First Edition - 4th Printing (below, right).

Offered for the collector is this EXQUISITE leatherbound version of JRR Tolkien's classic, The Lord of the Rings. Designed to emulate the Red Book of Westmarch, this edition is sometimes called "The Collector's Edition". The Red Book of Westmarch (sometimes Red Book of the Periannath, and The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings, also known as the Thain's Book after its principal version) is the book in which the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings were written. As Tolkien followers know, The (original) Red Book was a single volume, bound in red leather and kept in a red case. The Red Book was written by Bilbo and his heir Frodo Baggins, and contained both their adventures, as well as a lot of background information which the Bagginses collected.

The Book was started by Bilbo, recounting his quest of Erebor, which he called There and Back Again. He gave the Book to Frodo at Rivendell after completing it, and Frodo organized Bilbo's manuscript and used it to write down his own quest during the War of the Ring. The title page was inscribed with various titles that had been subsequently crossed out: (see page 307 in ROTK).

My Diary: My Unexpected Journey. The Adventures of Five Hobbits. The Tale of the Great Ring, compiled by Bilbo Baggins from his own observations and the accounts of his friends.

What we did in the War of the Ring. Here Bilbo's hand ended and Frodo had written.

THE DOWNFALL OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS AND THE RETURN OF THE KING. As seen by the Little People; being the memoirs of Bilbo and Frodo of the Shire, supplemented by the accounts of their friends and the learning of the Wise. Together with extracts from Books of Lore translated by Bilbo in Rivendell.

Obviously, this is NOT THE actual Red Book of Westmarch but as stated earlier, was designed to emulate that book. It is the complete, unabridged and full novel of The Lord of the Rings including all appendices AND a huge pull out map. Early printings of The Lord of the Rings are rarely found, especially any printing under 10, and your chances of finding two any time soon, other than these, are quite slim.

Printings are now over seventy, so finding 4th printings like these are EXTREMELY rare! This is a BEAUTIFUL set and a Tolkien collector's dream! If you don't, I can't go back and fix it later! For any of the other hundreds of items I have available use the link at the bottom of the page.

Regarding Auctions & the Item.. I have been collecting books (especially Tolkien-related)and music for over 35 years and have amassed an enormous library.

I do not subscribe to "grading" as it is so subjective and most of the "graders" truly have no clue! Therefore I'll simply describe things in normal English! This is a gently handled and previously read set of hardcover books in GREAT condition, with slipcases as issued. The book is green leather bound with gilt and red foil embellishments on the front cover and spine (shown above). The slipcase is leather bound as well but unadorned.

It measures approximately 7" x 9.25" and is about an inch thick. The Red Book of Westmarch is bound in red leather with beautiful gilt and colored embellishments to the cover and spine (shown above to the right).

The hard slipcase is covered in the same material as the book but is unadorned. It measures approximately 6.25" x 9.5" and is over 2 thick. It is hard to tell if this copy has ever actually been opened past the first few pages.

The bindings are tight and solid and all pages are crisp, clear, and bright. IMPORTANT FACTOID: There has been much controversy over the years as to whether or not this is "real" leather or "faux" leather.

Faux leather is something that looks like leather but is not. Bonded leather has animal hide along with other materials and is oft times called, inappropriately, faux leather. It looks, smells and feels like leather to me, so there you have it. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL set and one, I doubt, you will ever find offered together again!

It would be hard not to! A FEW WORDS ON TOLKIEN COLLECTIBILITY... Granted, some may be hard to find, but not rare.

In order to be a VALUABLE collectible, the books need to be immaculate or close to it, a scarce or extremely early printing of an early edition and if it comes with a dust jacket, that too should be close to fine. Otherwise, they are just common items not worth much, but people are paying gobs of cash, caught up in the frenzy. Before you pay high bucks on a RARE or COLLECTIBLE edition, ask questions and demand to see a picture. I don't believe all sellers are trying to be dishonest, some just don't know any better... There are links above and below and why not bookmark my site to make it easier to find at a later date!
